A Little About Palm Springs
Palm Springs is a major residential area and recreational hub located in the Coachella Valley of Southern California. The city of Palm Springs has a total population of about forty three thousand permanent residents, in addition to thousands of tourists who frequent the region every month. Palm Springs, which is a part of the larger San Bernardino-Riverside Metroplex, covers a physical area of about ninety five square miles. Palm Springs was originally inhabited by the Agua Caliente Band of the Cahuilla Indian Tribe, and is currently home to the Agua Caliente Reservation. Palm Springs was first explored by Europeans (the Spanish) in the early nineteenth century, and became a popular resort destination for the southwestern United States during the early twentieth century. Palm Springs is located between the Santa Rosa, Little San Bernardino, San Bernardino, and San Jacinto Mountains, and enjoys warm, sunny weather throughout the year. In fact, during winter the temperature rarely drops below seventy degrees, and the sun shines more than three hundred and fifty days per year. The arid environment of Palm Springs is accompanied by an impressive selection of desert wildlife and plants, including the California Fan Palm.
Palm Springs has transitioned from a celebrity vacation destination to a popular year round tourist destination, especially during winter. Palm Springs’ economy is heavily based on tourism, including a considerable selection of casinos and accompanying resorts. Palm Springs also continues to maintain a strong relationship with its Hollywood roots, hosting the annual Palm Springs International Film Festival in January. The entire family can enjoy the impressive recreational selections of Palm Springs, which include high end resort facilities as well as niche boutiques. The region is home to a water park, playgrounds, skateboard parks, and a variety of neighborhood recreational sites. The Palm Springs Convention Center hosts a number of important exhibitions and trade conventions every year, while each week brings the Village Fest to downtown Palm Springs. The Village Fest boasts a range of different attractions, such as a farmer’s market, musical performances, food tents, and arts and crafts demonstrations. There are more professional artistic works on display at the Palm Springs Art Museum, which hosts regular events at the Annenberg Theater. One of the best ways to enjoy the scenery of the Coachella Valley and the skyline of Palm Springs is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which provides incredible views from an altitude of up to eight thousand, five hundred feet.
The remarkable scenic beauty of the Palm Springs area is on display near the city at two excellent recreational facilities. The Moorten Botanical Garden and Cactarium and the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert exhibit some of the rare flora and fauna which are found in the Coachella Valley. Although there are no major league sports organizations in Palm Springs, the city is the home of two semi-pro baseball teams – the Palm Springs Chill and the Palm Springs Power. Additionally, the region is well known for the BNP Paribas Open Tennis Tournament, the Career Builder Challenge PGA event (formerly the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic Golf Tournament), the ANA Inspiration LPGA event (formerly the Dinah Shore/Kraft Nabisco Championship) and an impressive number of boxing championships. There are well over a hundred golf courses within the Coachella Valley, dotting the desert landscape with stretches of verdant green. Palm Springs is served by the Palm Springs Unified School District, which includes more than a dozen elementary schools, four middle schools, four high schools, and a number of smaller, more specialized facilities. In addition, Palm Springs boasts a number of private schools, and the College of the Desert.
